The problem is that we can’t get a system good enough that it “doesn’t need a steering wheel” without a ton of real world testing. We also need a regulatory framework that provides some kind of testing and validation of systems before they are put on the road.
As it is, I don’t see how the cowboy corporation that built itself by breaking local laws has the discipline to develop self-driving cars. This problem is harder than putting a man on the moon.
