Any human driver would have prevented this. Don't trust the dash cam footage that Uber's PR department put out. It was artificially darkened. The actual street is well lit.
I want self-driving cars too, and I do worry about incidents like this turning people against them. But the blame belongs with Uber for testing an unsafe prototype in a public space.
