I don't think animals are aware of their actions in the same way that a human is though. An animal hardly knows it is 'doing' something, they operate on a sort of autopilot, with the brain instinctively making almost all their decisions automatically. in a human this is very different, we can operate on autopilot, but most humans also have the ability to stop and consider an action before it is executed, although this ability is not exercised often. that is what I believe true consciousness is, the ability to take manual control, so to speak, of our own brains.
