That's ridiculous. Self-driving cars are not going to be risk free. They'll be ripe with possibly-fatal flaws, by orders of magnitude moreso than existing automobiles. Then there's the exploitability of the various components to suffer sabotage. If the automakers are being held liable for billions in damages now for emissions, ignition, airbags, etc then just imagine the class action lawsuits that could happen. The only way for self-driving cars to fully integrate into the normal transportation system is if the automakers enjoy indemnity. They'd be insane to take direct responsibility for people's lives unless the cars were fixed to a track. I work with similar technologies and there simply aren't enough redundancies to overcome issues at 60+mph. Insurance isn't going anywhere anytime soon, if anything people will have to take out additional insurance. While I look forward to the tech, you'd have to be a fool to be an early-adopter.
