As someone who works in insurance from a data perspective, yes self driving cars are coming and yes everyone in the industry is bracing for it. There are a couple of things i will mention real tldr like.
1) Safety features: there are a lot of new safety features in cars that have been reducing the number of wrecks people have which is great, but also makes repairs more expensive for these specialty electronic parts.
2) Self driving cars: These have already been shown to greatly reduce probability of an accident from all the stats i have seen with idications for greatly continued improvement over time. I think this might take some time for adoption, but will see the greatest growth in the elderly and disabled sector due to their inability to properly drive a manual car. I would expect for a large consolidation in the insurance industry as these become more widely adapted as most carriers will probably be unable to stay afloat as individual premiums decline.
You are totally right about it taking years for new car features to make it into the majority of the market. Think about this, the average age of a car on the road is over 11 years. So if self driving cars make up the new-car group by about 5% per year starting in 2025 (i think this is somewhat reasonable), then it would take around 15 years after that for self driving to be the majority, so we are talking around 2040 when that would happen.
