But they redesigned them over the next couple decades and now most people get around by bicycle and those who need cars use those. Automobile congestion isn't solved for them, but people have alternative options (they also have fantastic transit). Locally, look at Vancouver, BC, New York City, or Portland, OR. All these places are making huge strides in giving people options in their commute so that when somebody needs to get around the city they're not stuck using their car. They have true, meaningful options. Diversifying your transportation options is the smartest thing a city can do. Up until very recently, cities have almost entirely invested in SOVs and it has not worked. In fact, it is unsustainable in almost every sense you can think of. From pollution, to congestion, to simple maintenance financing. Cities are struggling around the world with our addiction to SOVs. And none of this is to say that SOVs don't have a place in the world going forward, but they absolutely can't continue to be the dominant transportation method.
