Agreed. There are too many facile analogies out there comparing mental processes to AI and relating them to evolutionary explanations (think memes). Which is fine and maybe an ok way to explain a concept to a layperson, but it hardly seems a philosophically rigorous idea. And what does it get you? It doesn't help solve the problem of consciousness or even add much explanatory force to our understanding of the conscious mind. It feels like lately a lot of pop philosophers have resorted to trendy analogies of the mind to genetic evolution and AI, while abandoning the real search to define what exactly consciousness is. Gets better publicity that way I suppose--but is it even philosophy?
