Actually, I haven't heard a single English speaker ever refer to left wingers as "liberal". Only to the shitty economically liberal (strictly right wing) parties, primarily US Democrats.
Same goes for German speaking countries.
The liberal parties are parties like the FDP (right/center right wing) and NEOS (center left/progressive on certain social issues, right wing on economic issues).
