Thnx for sharing your thoughts on this since that in itself moves the broader discussion forward in the light. It feels important that this encyclical now exists, even if many of us have not yet fully read or absorbed it, because it gives names, framing, language, and baseline positions to AI as seen through a specific lens...Christian in this case. Not because everyone must agree with that lens, rather because civilization-scale transitions benefit when major perspectives articulate how they see the moment, the risks, the responsibilities, and the opportunities ahead. Hopefully this also encourages other lenses to emerge with similar rigor, courage, thoughtfulness, and clarity from their own foundations and traditions, and helps widen the collective conversation rather than narrow it. Not necessarily toward full philosophical merger, history suggests that is unlikely, still even partial convergence matters enormously because civilizations rarely collapse from lack of intelligence, more often they fracture from failure to coordinate wisdom across difference. 🪞

Yup, incredible how many people “read” the encyclical just to vomit the same and shallow takes on social media. I decided that I will not talk about it until I’ve read it and meditated it all.

One of the first books I ever purchased, because I was intrigued by the title, was Paul Tillich's The Courage to Be. Probably time to dust it off, jump on the couch during a rainy afternoon, and revisit it. I know it reinforced some thoughts I'd already had about life, the universe and everything. Thanks Clara for reminding me of its existence. Paul Tillich's The Courage to Be is widely regarded as a brilliant, foundational text of 20th-century religious and philosophical thought. It explores how modern humans can conquer existential anxiety—such as the fear of death, meaninglessness, and guilt—by affirming their own existence through radical courage.

Thanks for shining light on this social media phenomenon of posting opinion, analysis, summary etc for everything at lightning speed. I understand the algorithm rewards jumping on virality bandwagon but some stories like this needs stepping away from the noise, reading, re reading and weigh both side of the debate carefully.

Critical thinking. As a child, I was told in the Catholic Church that the eye in the center of the dome was the eye of God — it watches you everywhere. In that sense, I find myself wondering what goals a US pope has who cooperates with Anthropic and other tech giants. The former pope had a connection with Epstein. „Anthropic has engaged with the Vatican in ethical considerations for AI, even listing three Catholic thinkers, including Bishop Paul Tighe, secretary of the Dicastery for Culture and Education, among the contributors of its Claude Constitution which guides the company's flagship large language model.“

"It is not moral rules or principles or commandments that are broken when morally wrongful things happen; it is persons—their flesh, their bones, their sense of inner worth—that get bruised and broken. In the first instance, morals concerns the harm done2persons, their pains/sufferings.indignities; morals is, minimally&if nothing else, our awareness of these violations&their hurt as what should not happen, as above all what should not happen2me&it is because of my intense awareness—however hidden from focal consciousness—of how utterly vulnerable I am, of how I would suffer if my bodily integrity were violated if I were beaten&thrashed, that I can be brought to the thought of how (most) others are like me, vulnerable/injurable&how they2would wish never2undergo the torments of physical harm or savage humiliation... it is our robust understanding of our own vulnerability, our own fear of pain/suffering, our deeply personal sense that these things should not happen, that their occurring@hands of others would wrong me in my very being, that they would discount or injure the value I am (my sense of inner worth or dignity)&the knowledge that others are like me&share that understanding of our shared predicament of vulnerability." 1/2

John Purcell Oh, can't help you with that one. I know nothing at all about taxes in the Vatican State. I do recall that the former Pope declined the income that he was entitled to, and if Pope Leo did that same, then I would venture the guess that he likely won't have taxes to pay, regardless of citizenship.

Jason Szkwarek with respect, this is a pretty noisy take. Here's why, people who don't think they have a world view, very often do, they just don't know they do. The encyclical is inviting people into a wealth of knowledge about things they rarely look at through any other lens besides the one they use the most, and, hat tip back to OP, the most important teaching is this one: What is "truth"? Because without the foundation os asking how that works fist, we rely on other lenses. To be fair I found the encyclical sorely failing to make any solid points and I'm writing a response as we speak, but it is fascinating to watch people fumble around the concept of meaning and where it comes from.
